Evelyn’s Story

“I enjoy the investigative side of audit and understanding the story behind the numbers."

My name is Evelyn, and I’m an Audit Graduate at Accru Melbourne. I joined the firm in 2025 and work within the Audit and Assurance team, where I support a range of audit engagements across different industries.

My role involves assisting with audit testing, reviewing financial information and developing an understanding of how businesses operate, while ensuring financial reporting meets the required standards and compliance obligations.

Before moving to Australia from India, I worked within the banking industry in a role focused on reconciliations and investigations.

A large part of my work involved identifying discrepancies, investigating variances and understanding where issues within financial data had occurred. Over time, I realised I genuinely enjoyed the investigative aspect of the role. As someone who always imagined becoming a detective when I was younger, I found audit offered a similar sense of problem solving and curiosity, just within a financial environment instead. That interest ultimately led me toward a career in audit, where I could continue developing those analytical skills while gaining a deeper understanding of the bigger picture behind the numbers.

Moving to Australia was an exciting step personally and professionally, and what initially attracted me to Accru was the firm’s supportive culture and collaborative environment. Since joining the Melbourne office, I’ve had the opportunity to work across a variety of engagements while continuing to build my technical and professional skills.

In my current role, I’m gaining experience across a broad range of audit engagements and industries. I enjoy working through financial information, understanding how different organisations operate and ensuring that reporting processes are accurate and reliable. My previous experience in reconciliations and investigations has also helped me develop strong attention to detail and the ability to identify and understand discrepancies within financial data.

One of the things I enjoy most about audit is the exposure to a wide variety of organisations and industries. Since joining the Audit and Assurance team, I’ve worked with clients across sectors including schools, not-for-profits, aged care providers, gymnastics centres and foreign subsidiaries. Audit provides a unique opportunity to work closely with different organisations, understand how they operate within their own environments and see how their financial reporting processes contribute to the broader success of the business.

One of the most rewarding moments in my career so far has been reaching the stage where I’ve been trusted to take ownership of sections of audit work more independently.

Starting in audit comes with a significant learning curve, so receiving positive feedback from managers on the quality of my work was incredibly encouraging. It reinforced the progress I was making professionally and gave me confidence that I was contributing meaningfully to both the team and our clients.

For me, one of the things that makes Accru stand out is the diversity of both the work and the people. When I first moved to Melbourne, adjusting to a new environment and experiencing such a diverse city was something very new to me. Through my role at Accru, I’ve had the opportunity to interact with clients and colleagues from a wide range of industries and backgrounds, which has helped me become more confident both professionally and personally. The supportive culture within the firm has made it a great environment to learn, grow and continue building my career in audit.

Outside of work, I enjoy baking and experimenting with new recipes. During my interview at Accru, I mentioned that I was trying to perfect my butter cake recipe and after plenty of trial and error, I’m happy to say I’ve finally mastered it. I also enjoy exploring Victoria, whether that’s discovering new places on a weekend drive or heading out for early morning treks and swims whenever I get the chance.
