Madeleine’s Story

"From day one, I felt incredibly welcomed and supported. Accru’s culture has created a space where I truly feel I can grow and thrive."

My career journey proves that it’s never too late to follow a new passion. Just under 2.5 years ago, I began my journey as a Graduate Accountant in the Audit team at Accru Melbourne—and it’s been one of courageous change, personal growth, and purpose-driven work.

Before stepping into the world of audit, I spent 10 years as a hairdresser. In my late 20s, I started feeling drawn toward a more analytical and impactful field. That’s when I made the decision to study a Bachelor of Accounting at Swinburne University (online). Through a mutual connection, I was introduced to Ahmad from Accru, and not long after, I joined the team—a defining moment in my professional life.

From day one, I felt incredibly welcomed and supported. Accru’s culture has created a space where I truly feel I can grow and thrive.

Today, I specialise in auditing not-for-profit organisations. I’m inspired by their missions and find real fulfilment in helping them stay compliant and sustainable through high-quality assurance work. My attention to detail and communication skills have become key strengths in building trust with clients and managing more complex engagements.

One of my proudest career moments happened early on when I independently secured an ad hoc audit engagement related to a legal case. It pushed me to grow quickly and was a great opportunity to show initiative.

What makes Accru special to me? It’s the people, the diversity of work, and the professional development. There’s always someone willing to help, and always something new to learn.

Outside of work, I stay busy with ballroom dancing, I’m a devoted AFL footy fan, and I still treasure my years in hairdressing—it’s a unique part of my story that I’ll always carry with me.

My journey shows that with the right environment and mindset, changing careers can open the door to exciting and meaningful opportunities.
